Why choose Oxford?
Oxford has a thriving and well-developed tourist industry, covering a wide range of places to visit and fun, interesting things to do to in Oxford. An historic yet modest city, Oxford boasts world-class museums of international significance, such as the Ashmolean Museum, the world’s first university museum, which houses famous paintings and priceless ancient artifacts.
People who spend time wandering the streets of Oxford marvel at the architectural wonders of the buildings of the past. Christ Church is one of the most famous colleges in the United Kingdom, as a result of the successful alumni, Albert Einstein for example, and also its place in history. During England’s civil war, Oxford became Charles I’s capital, with Christ Church College the place where he held his parliament and the cathedral was where held mass. It is also where Harry Potter was filmed and where Lewis Carroll was inspired to write ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’.
The Sheldonian Theatre is another incredible example of how Oxford attracted the best architects in the land, to construct elegant and innovative buildings for public use.
Visitors to Oxford are encouraged to visit other museums, such as the Museum of the History of Science, the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and many others, for their considerable wealth of culture and fascinating items from the past. If it is a tranquil walk you’re after, then a stroll through Christ Church Meadow along the River Thames is highly recommended; here you can see the various colleges of the university competing in rowing events.
If it’s something more exciting you’re looking for, look no further than Oxford’s Ice Rink. Each day there are three sessions for people to show off their moves on the ice. To warm up from ice skating, why not visit Oxford’s bowling complex or go shopping in one of the shopping centres here? The Covered Market is full of independent shops and boutiques which cater to customers looking for souvenirs and presents for family and friends.
Most museums are free to enter and all of them cater to people of all ages, and welcome people from every part of the world. Oxford has something for everyone, and has a young, vibrant student population who love the city for the same reasons that the rest of the public do. The students can often be found at Cowley Road Carnival, which is a celebration of the multicultural diversity of Oxford every summer. The theatres and cinemas jostle for prime city space with Oxford’s international restaurants, and the scene of modern life juxtaposed with the traditional way Oxford has been for hundreds of years has fascinated and intrigued visitors, and will continue to do so for a long, long time.
